Health and social service workers are required to work with Māori and demonstrate knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi/The Treaty of Waitangi, te reo Māori and tikanga Māori.
This online course enables you to discuss the history of, the process and impact of colonisation in Aotearoa New Zealand, and the context in which Te Tiriti o Waitangi/The Treaty of Waitangi was signed. You will be able to recognise the unique place of Māori as Tangata Whenua, the fundamental nature of the bicultural relationship between Tangata Whenua and Tauiwi, and the implications of Te Tiriti o Waitangi/The Treaty of Waitangi and subsequent principles for working in the health and social service sectors.
This online course will also introduce beginner level te reo Māori, Māori perspectives on family and kinship, health and wellbeing, and the range of protocols (nga tikanga me nga kawa) to ensure respectful participation on marae and in other Māori cultural spaces of significance.
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to
- Discuss the context in which Te Tiriti o Waitangi/The Treaty of Waitangi was signed, including the pre and post colonial history of Aotearoa New Zealand and the process and impact of colonisation and decolonisation.
- Discuss the unique place of Māori as Tangata Whenua, the concept of biculturalism, te Tiriti o Waitangi/the Treaty of Waitangi and subsequent principles.
- Use beginner level te reo Māori terms and pronunciation.
- Describe key protocols (nga tikanga me nga kawa) to ensure respectful participation on marae and in Māori cultural spaces of significance.
- Discuss Māori perspectives on family and kinship, health and wellbeing and the implications for health and social service practice.
Assessment
This course is 100% internally assessed.
To pass this course, students must attend the noho marae unless granted an exemption by the Programme Leader.
