This course builds on the sociological concepts introduced in Self in Society 1. It provides an in depth examination of the histories of early childhood services and the political, contested nature of the early childhood curriculum.

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to

Examine the discourses and debates around the notion of quality in early childhood settings
Discuss the impact of multiculturalism on a bicultural early childhood curriculum
Demonstrate knowledge of the history, politics, key movements and people, who have contributed to the development of early childhood education in Aotearoa New Zealand
Evaluate and compare the Aotearoa New Zealand early childhood curriculum with other approaches and models of educational curricula
Outline the history and socio-political events leading to the development of the national early childhood curriculum Te Whariki in light of future directions for early childhood curricula.
