This course will give you an introduction to mental health and the major paradigms in the Aotearoa New Zealand mental health system.

 Please note, this course name replaces 73223, Mental Health and Addiction Studies: Aetiologies.

What you will learn

In this course you will develop knowledge of some of the major psychological disorders and responses to them. You will also gain an understanding of how working in this field can be structured, the agencies and institutions that are part of these structures.

When you successfully complete this course you will be able to:

  • identify and analyse the causes of a range of disorders and the critical issues in diagnosis and assessment of these disorders
  • apply knowledge of a range of approaches for working with service users
  • synthesise knowledge of the organisations and professional roles typically working with mental health service users and their legal and ethical responsibilities.
