This course examines how environmental concerns are represented and influenced by today’s mass media.

Concern about environmental issues is fuelling vigorous policy debates. These debates raise questions about the social and ethical limits of technology, the role of science in decision-making and conflicting views about development.

As a major forum for communicating information about the world we live in, the mass media play an important role in environmental debates. Public knowledge, values and opinions relating to environmental issues are reflected and shaped by media dialogue.  

What you will learn

When you successfully complete this course you will be able to:

  • discuss the role of the media in reflecting and shaping environmental concerns 
  • analyse the coverage of environmental issues by the news media
  • evaluate key factors that influence the parameters of environmental reporting
  • critically examine ethical issues with respect to environmental reporting.
