This course will introduce you to problems encountered by hydraulic engineers. It will give you a grounding in fluid statics, steady uniform and non-uniform incompressible flow in pipelines and channels, pumped systems, culvert hydraulics and flow measurement.

What you will learn

When you successfully complete this course you will be able to:

  • describe the relevant properties of fluids
  • calculate pressures and forces on floating and immersed bodies
  • undertake simple stability analyses for small gravity dams or weirs
  • determine the rolling stability of a prismatic floating body
  • analyse and design simple pipelines for steady flow
  • select a pump to meet a specified duty
  • match a pump to a pipeline system and determine the operating point of a pump
  • analyse pump and pipeline systems involving single and multiple pumps
  • solve simple steady uniform and non-uniform open channel flow problems
  • design rigid boundary channels
  • classify gradually varied flow profiles
  • apply the concepts of specific energy and specific force in open channel flow
  • design pipe and box culverts
  • estimate the head discharge relationship for common flow measuring devices.

Assessment

Assessment for this course is:

  • 30% internally assessed
  • 70% exam.
