This course introduces students to the management of library and information services, programmes and collections for children and teens in the context of Aotearoa New Zealand’s bicultural and multicultural environment.
Children and teens are a very significant group of library users, with distinct needs. Libraries and information services play a pivotal role for this user group in providing access to information, developing information access skills and stimulating reading. School libraries and children’s and teens’ library services can have a major positive impact on student achievement and learning. Librarians need to be equipped with particular skills to cope with special collections and needs of children and young people. This course provides students with the opportunity to develop specialist knowledge and skills essential for the understanding and management of library and information services for children and teens.

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
- Explain the features of current library and information services for children and teens, and discuss issues, research and trends in public libraries and schools, in New Zealand and overseas, and how these might affect the services for this user group.
- Plan and manage collections and services targeted at children and teens.
- Describe and apply ethical management and use of information, equity of information access, freedom of information, privacy, cultural knowledge, and copyright, in New Zealand’s bicultural and multicultural environment, to the provision of library and information services for children and teens.
- Evaluate the ways in which library and information services respond to and connect children and teen information and literacy seeking requirements with collections and services.
