This online library course presents the concepts of knowledge organisation, including aspects such as metadata, cataloguing and resource description, and subject analysis (classification, subject indexing, thesauri, taxonomies, ontologies, tags and folksonomies, functional document classification).

These concepts underpin the storage, accessibility, physical and virtual organisation, contextualisation, and retrieval of knowledge, information and documents across the wider information professions.

The course shows how these concepts are applied to the organisation of knowledge, information and documents within systems, for purposes such as libraries, archives, recordkeeping, databases and directories.

It explains the design and management of knowledge organisation systems, using the concepts of knowledge organisation, in various situations and for various purposes. It also enables students to understand how to evaluate technologies for knowledge organisation in the light of the needs of their clients.

For more information watch the course introduction video below.
