This online ECE course builds your competence and confidence in the use of te reo Māori, Pacific languages, New Zealand Sign Language and other languages in curriculum experiences.

You will explore how theories of learning and development have informed current thinking around culturally responsive practice, inclusion and diversity in early childhood education. You will continue to explore how your own background can impact on your understandings and practices, and the importance of working with families, whānau, communities and kaiako (teachers) and other agencies in developing your culturally responsive knowledge, attitudes and skills. Additional focus: supporting tamariki (children) from migrant and refugee backgrounds.

Learners who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • Critically reflect on their personal and professional selves and the importance of being culturally responsive to provide a meaningful and inclusive curriculum for all children.
  • Relate theories of learning and development to pedagogical approaches to cultural responsiveness in curriculum.
  • Discuss the role of parents, whānau, community and other agencies in children’s learning and the implications of respectful collaborative partnerships for supporting tamariki identity, language and culture in early learning settings and communities.
