This course will build on ākonga understanding of the importance of culturally relevant and inclusive teaching. The aim of the course is to strengthen te reo Māori of ākonga and to introduce them to Pacific languages, New Zealand Sign Language and other languages in use in Aotearoa New Zealand so that they can support the cultural and linguistic diversity of all tamariki in early learning services.

This course provides ākonga with an opportunity to learn more about Kaupapa Māori theory, Pasifika approaches, language acquisition theories, and inclusive practice. Ākonga will use curriculum and supporting documents to evaluate their own knowledge and skills and develop their cultural competence and confidence.

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • Discuss the importance of language in children’s identity, learning and development with specific reference to te reo Māori, Pacific languages and New Zealand Sign Language.
  • Describe key language acquisition theory elements that support tamariki to acquire their cultural identity through language.
  • Reflect on their preparedness for supporting culturally relevant practice in early learning services.
