- 20 Credits or more at Level 6 and Above in Psychology.
This course will give you an introduction to child and adolescent psychopathology. It will extend your knowledge and understanding of core psychological concepts and theories, while you acquire new specialist content matter in numerous issues related to the psychological disorders experienced across childhood and adolescence.
This course is for people who work or intend to work with children, adolescents and their families within government or community agencies in Aotearoa New Zealand. It is also for people who intend to go on to further study in psychology, including specialist clinical psychology training.
The learning approach uses case studies to provide a realistic depiction of the common themes and presentations when working with young people who are experiencing psychological disorders.
What you will learn
When you complete this course you will be able to:
- create psychological formulations and hypotheses regarding the aetiology of common child and adolescent psychological disorders experienced across developmental stages, which are based upon recognised theories in the field
- critically analyse the classification systems and diagnostic processes for common psychological disorders in children and adolescents
- describe valid and reliable psychological assessment procedures
- describe effective evidence-based treatments for common psychological disorders in children and adolescents
- identify relevant cultural and ethical issues related to working with children and adolescents experiencing psychological disorders within Aotearoa New Zealand.
Topics covered include:
- the major paradigms in the field of clinical child and adolescent psychology, including attachment theory
- psychological formulation
- classification of child and adolescent psychological disorders
- aetiology, assessment and evidence-based treatments of common psychological disorders across the lifespan of childhood and adolescence
- issues when working with young people experiencing common psychological disorders in Aoteraoa New Zealand, including culture and ethics.
