This course will introduce you to key research methods in the social and natural sciences. You will learn how different theories of knowledge including the scientific method, indigenous/traditional knowledge, and personal knowledge, informs research processes.

What you will learn

When you complete this course you will have knowledge of different research methods and be able to effectively evaluate published research papers and research processes. You will learn about:

  • the characteristics of research as a way of knowing
  • qualitative and quantitative research
  • identifying the key elements of the research process
  • distinguishing between specific research methods
  • selecting justifying an appropriate research method 
  • evaluating published research against general criteria and criteria specific to the approach and method used.
