This course will give you an understanding of conservation and natural resource law in New Zealand.

In this course you will examine key legislation affecting conservation and natural resource management, including:

  • the Conservation Act
  • Reserves Act
  • National Parks Act
  • Crown Minerals Act
  • Fisheries Act
  • Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act.

You will explore the purpose and operational provisions of the legislation and examine significant resource management issues. You will also consider the effects of international law on New Zealand’s environmental management framework.

This course is designed as a companion course to 72292 Resource Management Act & Local Government Act.

Topics covered include:

  • history and development of environmental law in New Zealand
  • conservation and historic heritage legislation
  • mining
  • freshwater management
  • coastal and marine legislation
  • biodiversity and protected areas
  • biosecurity and hazardous substances legislation.
